Introductions and Expectations

This blog was created as a way for all of us to share and reflect on our learning during this class. We hope that you will use it to share ideas, advice, celebrations, frustrations, questions, and answers. In addition, Linda and I will be posting a question each week to help us deepen our understanding of the concepts we are learning.
As part of our class requirements, you will be required to respond to the question each week.
Our hope is that you will use this blog to do more than just answer the question each week, but also as a free discussion and line of communication amongst all of us.

Your First Assignment:

Introduce yourself to each other. Who are you and what experience, if any, have you had with second language learners. Then share with us what your expectations are for this class. Do you have any specific needs or questions that you would like to have addressed?

  2. My name is Victoria Coughlin, Kindergarten teacher at Simis. I have had one or two ELD students in my class for most of the 10 years I have taught. (But none until this year under the new guidelines).

  3. My name is Bridget Brown. This is my 6th year of teaching first grade at Madison Rose Lane. I have had a few kiddos in my class that were/are second language learners but I don't really have very much experience. I am looking forward to learning more. I signed up to take this class because each of the categories sounds interesting. I am especially interested in learning strategies and techniques for teaching vocabulary. I feel this is a weakness for me. I am excited to begin next Wednesday :)

  5. Hello! My name is Kristi Branstrom. I currently teach kindergarten at Simis, and this is my fifth year. I have not had a great deal of experience with second language learners. We had an ELD class for a few years that was taught by another kindergarten teacher. However, we have had to change that to splitting up the kids because we don’t have enough kindergarten ELD to support a separate class. I am hoping that this class will give me strategies, lesson ideas, and new techniques that I can use in my classroom with second language learners. I don’t have any specific questions at this time. I am open to learning and trying new things during this class.

  6. Hi! My name is Amy Techau, and I am a second grade teacher at Rose Lane. This is my 10th year, all in 2nd grade at RL. The first few years I had a few second language learners each year. In the past few years, though I have had a gifted cluster, and not so many second language learners. I am excited to learn new ways to teach vocabulary strategies, and this is a growth area for me at this time. Looking forward to seeing/meeting you all!

  9. Hi, my name is Kiley Sifferman. I am currently in my 5th year of teaching. I taught an ELD 1st grade class a couple years ago. Other than teaching in the ELD program for a year, I have a lot of experience with ELL students due to the high population at our school. I have many reclassified ELL students in my class this year. I look forward to taking this class to learn about more strategies to meet the needs of my learners!

  11. Hi, I'm Grace. After teaching 4th grade for 12 years at Heights I transferred to 2nd grade at MTA. Though I do not have any ELD students this year, I hope to learn new strategies for a grade level that is new to me.

  13. Hi, all! I am Amy Ball, and I teach kindergarten at MTA. My first two years of teaching, I was in the West Valley, and I had almost 100% ELL students in my room each year (25 year 1 and 36 year 2!). For the last 3 years at MTA, I haven't had any ELL students. From this class, I hope to get some awesome strategies to boost my students' writing skills. I know from the SEI classes required by the State, that these strategies align very easily with kindergarten students. I love learning new stuff because it makes me more excited to do MORE with my kiddos.

  14. Hello!

My name is Kristen Anderson and I teach first grade at Camelview. I am looking for strategies to help the ELD students in my classroom and my after school tutoring students. I see them struggle with their writing. I am hoping to learn how to better support them during writing time.
