Please keep in mind that these strategies are excellent ways to help build your students vocabulary and understanding of morphology.
To refresh your memory, the strategies we discussed were:
- Noun Study
- Antonym Study
- Vocabulary Frames
- Vertical Sentences
- Morph House
Our next class will be our last class, so please take a little time to reflect on everything that we have shared with you and come to class prepared to ask any questions or offer any suggestions that you have uncovered over the course of our classes. We would also like to invite you to bring examples of student work from your classroom. We would all love to see what your kids are doing with these strategies.
I have included a new page to our blog which provides an illustration of how the strategies that we have discussed fit into the Language Star, look for the tab at the top of the blog. This illustration will help you to see how these activities will help your students to meet the needs found within the Language Star.
Have a great week and I am looking forward to our last session together!
I did the vocabulary frames with my class, and I thought it went well. I teach kinder, and it was interesting to hear what they came up with for how different things can be used. The majority of students were then able to take the sentence frame and create their own sentence. I had them circle share when they were all done. This seemed to be a motivator for the students because they always love sharing their work with each other. I plan on doing more vocabulary frame lessons in the future. Thanks!

We've had a busy week! As we introduced the new letter of the week (I teach Kinder), we used the vocabulary frames to talk about the new /f/ vocab. This went very well, and the students really enjoyed thinking of all of the things that the words were used for..."This is a fish. It is used for watching and eating."
ReplyDeleteWe had started antonyms last week, so we tried something new...we used the vertical sentences with the antonyms. 'The small cat sleeps quietly outside' turned into 'The big cat plays loudly inside'. Creating the sentences with the antonyms was easy for them, writing them was the hard part. For next week's vertical sentence, I will have the words typed (written) for them, then they can construct the sentences.
I found that this activity is great for my class because it has SO many ways to differentiate :)
Thank you!!
